A little souvenir from our talk show in March 23rd, A New Generation of Cergam: Futuristic Era

I’ll not talk about sci-fi things here, which were already been spoken in our Sunday event. I’ll not talk about Dark Venus, K.O.A, or Deviant too, as probably anyone who read this might already knew them. I’ll talk about what was happened there, while we sitting down and listening to our elders’ discussion.

We invited our elders (we described them as comic analysts, or reviewers, or perhaps historians, or maybe teachers) to come down in our event, and talk about futuristic and sci-fi genre in comic. At least that was our expectations. But I think we’re unlucky.

One more time, I said, as this repeatedly have been discussed over and over again, our elders ‘whining’ about Indonesian new generation of comic artists. Our hope is they’ll talk a little more gently about us, but they didn’t (Well, one of them did after all, but I think it wasn’t heal the damage). The others (as I said to my fellows) have mortars, bazookas, and…very large ‘bowie knife’. They shot at us, the stab us, and they made us pork chops. They said our new comics are some kind of ‘low products’, and they compared us with foreign artists. They praised our art skills, but then they discouraged us by downgrade our stories and concepts into, say ‘cat litters’.

Well, I’m not exactly mad at them, because I knew I couldn’t compare myself with their intelligent, and I admitted they have bigger brain, but I was very…disappointed.

As elders, they should have been wiser, as people always said that our tongue might sharper than sword. Instead of just whining, they should guide us. That was the real function of teachers and elders.
When they’ve read all those books they’ve been said (books by Verne, Camus, Kafka, and others-these are expensive books in Indonesia, believe me, unless you got them in free e-books, or get ‘lucky’ by found them in street market), and in our younger age we might only have read Herge, Urasawa, or Mine’s book (cheaper books, you can get them with discounts), they should lend us their strength. That’s not just by mad at us, but they should came down from their throne, get a grasp of our disadvantage in time, money and facilities, and rethink why we can’t produce a comic as good as they want. As my fellow has said: ‘I believe our comic artists can make a great story, but as they must sharpen their art skills, did they have time to read all those profound books? Did they have enough money to buy those books, or even to stop producing and let their hands grip and their eyes stare at them for months? If, and if only somebody rich enough as them elders, could lend them money to do those researches…’

And sure, they said to us, we should cooperate with professional writers. I agreed. But will they (writers) truly want to come to us as they saw this comic industry in Indonesia have no ‘great’ benefit? Will these elders truly want to jump into the mud and help us?

Now, one thing that we can do is ‘whining’ back to them, elders, this way:

‘We might not have those privileges as these elders have, but at least we didn’t just sit back and read. We raise our hands to draw; we spin our brain to tell stories. We didn’t just keep our thoughts for ourselves, we share them to others, whether they liked it, or not.’
